Easing into the School Year

Before we know it, summer will be over, and kids will be back in school. Along with a new school year comes the possibility of your child feeling anxious and nervous about going back to class. At Sage Day, students often struggle with symptoms of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. With that in mind, these feelings can be amplified by the stresses of starting a new grade. Here are steps you can take as a parent to best prepare your child for the new school year.
Routines
One of the best ways to prepare your child for a new school year is by getting them into a routine. Start a routine 2-3 weeks before school starts, and have the routine reflect what their routine during the school year will be like. This means setting a bedtime and alarms in the morning, having meal times and limiting screen time. Doing so will give your child a transition time to adjust to a new schedule. Being proactive can help prevent some of the back-to-school jitters and stresses your child may be experiencing.
Encouragement & Support
Self-reflection is a key step in overcoming our struggles. When your children begin to understand why they feel the way they do, it can be easier for them to cope and solve problems. Encouraging your children to come to you with their concerns is a great way for them to open up and become comfortable with how they are feeling. Activities like yoga, meditation and breathing exercises can aid in the self-reflection process and lower the stress on your child. If a child is particularly anxious, it can help to encourage them to visualize what they think a school day will be like. Talk through what types of situations would make them nervous and strategies to overcome them.
