Stars of Character!

Stars of Character

Our Mahwah campus recently held its biannual Stars of Character event, a celebration of students who exemplify the highest standards of character and integrity. Staff members from all departments came together to nominate deserving students from various grade levels for each of the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. After the nominations were in, the votes were diligently tallied, resulting in 12 outstanding students being recognized for their exceptional character traits each academic year.

The winning students were honored by having their names engraved on a prestigious plaque displayed in the hallway, symbolizing their lasting impact on the school community. Additionally, each winner was presented with a coveted Stars of Character T-shirt and a personalized certificate signed by the principal, acknowledging their remarkable achievements.

The event culminated in a special breakfast ceremony, where the winners and their families were invited to join in the festivities and bask in the well-deserved recognition. Mr. Johnson, a dedicated educator teaching English, Communications, and Learning Strategies to grade 7 and 8 students, delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of character development in shaping future leaders. The importance of character was emphasized by drawing parallels to non-player characters NPCs (non-player characters) in video games. Unlike in games where one can reset or reload to correct mistakes, real life demands a higher standard of behavior. Mr. Johnson highlighted the significance of treating others and oneself with decency and respect, underscoring the idea that actions in the real world have lasting consequences.

Earning a Star of Character symbolizes a commitment to self-improvement and conscious choices to acknowledge the humanity of others. Despite the challenges, Mr. Johnsons urged students to uphold good character consistently, emphasizing the intrinsic value of doing the right thing each day. He concluded with a poignant quote from Marcus Aurelius, encapsulating the essence of his message: Don't go on discussing what a good person should be. Just be one. This serves as a reminder to embody virtues rather than merely discussing them, inspiring individuals to strive towards being their best selves daily.

The Stars of Character event not only celebrates individual accomplishments but also reinforces the school's commitment to nurturing well-rounded students who embody the core values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. It serves as a reminder to the entire school community of the significance of character education in fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
